Welcome to Toy Factory Productions Ltd

Toy Factory Productions Ltd , first established in 1990 under the name Toy Factory Theatre Ensemble, is Singapore’s leading bilingual theatre company. Known for its fiercely original, gutsy and edgy productions, Toy has constantly redefined boundaries with its creative approach to theatre making.

From its humble beginnings as a puppetry theatre company, Toy has evolved through the years into a professional multi-disciplinary theatre company that strives to create works that are accessible to all audiences. Being bilingual enables Toy to address, perform and reach out to both English and Mandarin-speaking audiences, a role which has been challenging, demanding and ultimately, rewarding.

Shanghai Blues

(Mandarin Musical)
Shanghai, 1930s: China is at war with Japan which seeks to occupy the country.

As bombs rain down the city of Shanghai, a patriotic young man, Wen Chong, intent on joining the army to defend his country from invaders, saves the life of a young woman by stowing her safely under a bridge.

There and then, amidst the smoke and chaos of the air raid, under the dark shelter of the bridge, the two fall in love, despite not having seen each other clearly, and vow to meet under the same bridge when the war is over.

Shanghai, 1940s: The war is ended.

Wen Chong returns to Shanghai as a musician. Still haunted by thoughts of the mystery woman he fell in love with under the bridge, he goes back to the same bridge in the hope of meeting her again.

Unknown to Wen Chong, the woman he longs for is none other than Tu Yun, his neighbour downstairs and a feisty showgirl at a local nightclub in which he performs.

At the same time, the said lady also makes her way to the bridge, filled with similar hopes of meeting her wartime soulmate. Once there, however, hindered by the darkness, the two fail to recognize each other and pass each other by.

Meanwhile, Tu Yun befriends a perky, destitute young lady, Dan Lei, who has come to Shanghai to seek her fortune. Dan Lei lodges at Tu Yun’s flat as she gets her life sorted out. But fate would have it, a series of coincidences and mistaken identity leads to both women failing in love with Wen Chong.

In this test of love, friendship and loyalty, what will the trio’s individual choices be?
