Introduction

FIRST LIGHT is an original production helmed by actor-director Nelson Chia and presented by Toy Factory Productions Ltd. The play will be fully devised by Chia and his impressive cast of familiar theatre names as well as fresh faces from both the English and Mandarin theatre scenes.

The casts are:

Lim Kay Siu (Anna and the King, PCK Pte Ltd, Beauty World)
Neo Swee Lin (Army Daze, 3 Children and Mama Looking for her Cat)
Jalyn Han (Long House, Huayi Festival 2006)
Janice Koh (Apocalypse: LIVE!, OCBC-Singapore Theatre Festival 08)
Koh Wan Ching (I Am Queen, OCBC-Singapore Theatre Festival 2008)
Mia Chee (Machine, Singapore Arts Festival 2007)
Rei Poh (Angel-ism, OCBC-Singapore Theatre Festival 2008)

Theatrically inventive, First Light dissolves the barrier between theatre and memory – inviting the actors to use personal experiences to feed their characters; then challenging the created characters to use performance to relive their memories.

Set in a fantastic realm beyond death, yet rooted in the lives of contemporary Singaporeans, First Light promises to be both profoundly relevant yet surprising in the perspectives it offers. First Light will capture your heart as it faces the truths about old age and explores the richness of our twilight years.

Synopsis

If the entire world is a stage, what scene would you offer as a last encore?

Trapped in a limbo between existences, seven deceased Singaporeans are reading their own obituaries. A postman, a teacher, a grassroots leader, a businesswoman, an actress, a taxi-driver and his wife – seven elderly strangers with little in common in Life; now find themselves together as they face the greatest adventure of their lives - Death. Before this wait is over, they must each revisit, relive, re-enact the most significant moment in their life. Only then can they move on.

At turns funny and profoundly-moving, FIRST LIGHT is a thought-provoking new devised play that invites you to step beyond the veil to discover how sometimes, it is only after death that you really begin to live.

INTRODUCTION

(Mandarin Musical)
Shanghai, 1930s: China is at war with Japan which seeks to occupy the country.

As bombs rain down the city of Shanghai, a patriotic young man, Wen Chong, intent on joining the army to defend his country from invaders, saves the life of a young woman by stowing her safely under a bridge.

There and then, amidst the smoke and chaos of the air raid, under the dark shelter of the bridge, the two fall in love, despite not having seen each other clearly, and vow to meet under the same bridge when the war is over.

Shanghai, 1940s: The war is ended.

Wen Chong returns to Shanghai as a musician. Still haunted by thoughts of the mystery woman he fell in love with under the bridge, he goes back to the same bridge in the hope of meeting her again.

Unknown to Wen Chong, the woman he longs for is none other than Tu Yun, his neighbour downstairs and a feisty showgirl at a local nightclub in which he performs.

At the same time, the said lady also makes her way to the bridge, filled with similar hopes of meeting her wartime soulmate. Once there, however, hindered by the darkness, the two fail to recognize each other and pass each other by.

Meanwhile, Tu Yun befriends a perky, destitute young lady, Dan Lei, who has come to Shanghai to seek her fortune. Dan Lei lodges at Tu Yun’s flat as she gets her life sorted out. But fate would have it, a series of coincidences and mistaken identity leads to both women failing in love with Wen Chong.
