GRIND
24 March – 2 April 2016
Drama Centre Blackbox

Introduction

Written and directed by Goh Boon Teck, GRIND differs from a typical theatre presentation as it fuses both the performance area and the house into one art installation accessible for both audience and actors throughout the show. This play is set to expose the audience to a more vulnerable and bare perspective of the Singaporean gay psyche on the themes of family, love and lust.

A Contemporary Gay Play Of An Age Old Prejudice

After the over the top celebration of SG50, Singapore needs a quiet reflection. GRIND, performed as a tapestry of stories involving 4 local gay men contrasted against an art installation that fills the house with intimidating machines and an array of physical equipment.

The urgent gay agenda manifested through the eyes of gay men, Long, Tian, Pang & Gan. Set within the premises of the so-called conservative Singapore, their distant voices are often drowned by the majority. Their stories are weaved intricately from intimate topics of lust, love & family.

Introduction

Let the rain caress your fear and hidden insecurities

Let the rain beat upon your expressive yet speechless lips

Let the rain sing you the far too early swan song

This rain will change everything.

A Rain of Stories

In the grandest toast of Toy Factory Productions’ Silver Jubilee celebration in 2015, we are proud to restage the Beau Monde of all Mandarin Musicals, DECEMBER RAINS.

Serenading you with heartrending musical pieces by pivotal figures of Singapore Mandarin Pop – Liang Wern Fook and Singer/ Composer Jimmy Ye. Helmed by award-winning director, Goh Boon Teck, the Musical Director, Elaine Chan, Music Arranger Bang Wen Fu and a dream creative team, DECEMBER RAINS will be a visual and musical wonder that opens and touches every single heart with endless drizzles of emotions. Behold as the clouds roll in this August at Esplanade Theatre!

One unforgettable rain

December Rains is a story weaved by tenderness and hope.

The tumultuous 50s was a time of dreams and changes. Amidst all was a pair of young lovers whose innocent relationship was convoluted by social unrest, a marriage out of convenience, and violent parental disapprovals. The downpour of pain drenched the lonesome schoolmate who lingered, holding on to his unrequited love as he, too, was caught in the whirlpool.

As the rain season continued decades later, past grievances and mistakes surfaced, forcing decisions to be made. One cannot help but wonder if it is a sweet drizzle or a dire storm waiting.

TITOUDAO
Iconic Theatre

Regarded amongst the most iconic of Singaporean theatre, Titoudao is back again for an amazing 5th staging that promises a refreshing treat with the same endearing taste! After sweeping the inaugural LIFE! Theatre Awards, including the coveted Play of the Year, this highly-acclaimed masterpiece has gone on to wow audiences from Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou to Cairo.

Titoudao transcends borders with its biographical elements and distinct Singaporean flavour; its reflexive play-within-a-play pronounces intimate struggles between an individual’s dreams and circumstances, brilliantly dissecting tensions between tradition and a society’s progress.

Life Story

Tracing the life story of Madam Oon Ah Chiam, Titoudao portrays the struggles of this petite lady with big dreams, fighting against despairing personal states of poverty, gender inequality and shadowed marital vexations. Above all, invisible shackles from the diminishing state of her craft will confront all the strength and zeal that culminate in this inspirational tale of the person behind her most iconic character.

The stage shifts between Mdm Oon’s painful backstory and her mesmerizing Wayang performances as Titoudao. Against her vibrant comic male facade, the impassioned rendering of the actress’ ordeals highlight the unspoken currents beneath a time of rapid change and progression. Between the present theatrical form and traditional Wayang stage, the play sparkles with a mark of resilience as it presents the beauty of dreams and tradition.

Romeo & Juliet

IMG_8614 IMG_8662 WYP_5301 IMG_8868

Introduction

People say love conquers all.
Two teens decide to test the theory.
Putting their romance to the ultimate stress test,
Romeo and Juliet face off against blood debts, family feuds, deathbed curses,
Even the Grim Reaper himself.
Love may emerge the winner,
But is it the lovers who have everything to lose?

Synopsis

Romeo and Juliet remains one of Shakespeare’s most-performed classics, with the titular star-crossed sweethearts still the shining beacons of indomitable young love. Set in aristocratic Verona, the vicious blood feud between the lovers’ families, the Montagues and the Capulets, is blind to reason, not to mention romance. Young men perish in their prime, friends invoke curses on each other, and Romeo and Juliet’s right to love is inexorably denied…all in the name of an age-old enmity. It’s up to our two thwarted teenagers to change things – no matter what it takes. Come root for their battle to love, with Toy Factory’s sexy resurrection of this ancient classic for a modern audience.

The Crucible

cr-00 cr-01 cr-02 cr-03 cr-04 cr-05 cr-06 cr-07 cr-08

Introduction

Justice is blind. Really?
The truth shall prevail. Will it?
Do you have the strength to stand against the masses?
Enter a world all too familiar in idolising our higher authority which comes short in integrity, moral conduct and trust.

Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is a central work in the canon of American drama. Set in a theocratic society, in which the church and the state are one. In this religiously suppressed society, the fatal concoction of faith and law is thoroughly exposed. Faith is a belief with no necessary evidence; while Law only requires belief as evidence.

Synopsis

The daughter of local minister, Reverend Parris, has fallen into a coma-like state. Finding little medical reasons, rumours of witchcraft begin to spread. Parris’s niece, Abigail Williams, picks up on these rumours and lies about seeing the devil frolicking with the local townsfolk. As more townspeople are picked out as witches, will the community continue to sing the death knell as a holy hymn?

Do they want to kill because they believe the accused are witches, or do they believe the accused are witches because they want to kill?

Introduction

The Costumes – dressing the earthly and spiritual worlds takes on a modern twist

Tube Gallery, Bangkok, known for its stunning, breathtaking and creative costume design work will once again delight audiences with its whimsical but no less outstanding interpretations of the costumes. Here, they take on distinctively Tibetan, Nepali and Bhutanese influences with Tube Gallery’s signature edgy touch, departing from Han-inspired clothing traditionally associated with the times of Maha Moggallana. Audiences can expect an exhilarating showcase of colours and designs that evoke a fantasy of epic proportions.

The dancing – ethereal, mesmerising and surprising

Choreographed by veterans Yan Chong Lian and Ng Chay Kuang from the renowned Dance Ensemble Singapore and Dance Horizon Troupe Singapore respectively, and performed by dancers from these two established schools, the dancing will incorporate elements of traditional Chinese dance coupled with modern interpretations. Audiences will be thrilled with a segment that is reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ video!

The music – a blend of tradition and modernity

Original music by renowned song writer and producer Benny Wong takes inspiration from traditional Chinese music with unexpected contemporary influences. The result is a riveting score that suitably evokes the emotional journeys of the characters.

SYNOPSIS:

MAHA MOGGALLANA – A STORY OF FILIAL PIETY

A virtuous wife and doting mother finds herself losing her sons to Buddhism soon after the sudden loss of her husband. Her grief turns into anger. She fails to see the goodness of her son’s actions and instead deems them as abandoning her. Once a devout Buddhist, she retaliates by going against the Buddhism teachings. She eventually faces the retribution of her actions and suffers in the hell of Avicinaraka. While in hell, the mother is brutally tortured and is in constant pain and hunger. She cries out to her son, Maha Moggallana. He hears her and sets out on a mission to rescue his mother and all others who are suffering in hell. What results is an emotional journey of self-discovery, redemption and enlightenment.

To Kill A Mocking Bird

mocking-01 mocking-02 mocking-03 mocking-04 DSC_0470 DSC_0462 DSC_0242 DSC_0163

Introduction

Ripe with attitude, Goh Boon Teck’s delirious imagination has descended on one of literary history’s most perfect stories ever written, To Kill A Mockingbird.  This stylized and unconventional adaptation features a strong multi-racial cast of veterans and promising actors from both television and theatre. Aggressively modern and assertively trendy, audiences will be treated to a visual pastiche inspired by the coexistence of good and evil, and the simplicity of light and dark. While taking artistic liberties in its staging, the issues of class, courage, compassion and prejudice, explored in the book remain fundamental.  To Kill A Mockingbird will intoxicate with its gritty and intense look at human behavior, gone wrong.

Synopsis

Based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel published in 1960, this adaptation for stage is by Christopher Sergel.

To Kill a Mockingbird fearlessly illustrates the themes of racial injustice and the destruction of innocence. With its lessons on tolerance and to decry prejudice, this provoking play remains committed to explore the moral nature of human beings and the coexistence of good and evil.

The story teller: A young and feisty tomboy.

The place: A sleepy and tired old town.

The time: The early 20th century or any time when we slipped our conscience.

The issue: A black man is accused of raping a white woman.

The protagonist: An idealistic lawyer gets to defend the black man.

The problem: His defense is far from easy, because few people in this town believe in the guiltlessness of an accused black.

“To Kill a Mockingbird is a gift to the entire world. As a model of good writing and humane sensibility, this book will be read and studied forever.”

Let the rain caress your fear and hidden insecurities

Let the rain beat upon your expressive yet speechless lips

This rain will change everything.

A Rain of Stories

In the grandest toast of Toy Factory Productions’ Silver Jubilee celebration in 2015, we are proud to restage the Beau Monde of all Mandarin Musicals, DECEMBER RAINS.

Serenading you with heartrending musical pieces by pivotal figures of Singapore Mandarin Pop – Liang Wern Fook and Singer/ Composer Jimmy Ye.

Two teens decide to test the theory.

Even the Grim Reaper himself.
